Unpopular opinion: the little $8 thermometer I got at a hardware store in 2012 beats every fancy one I have tried since
I have been using this cheap dial thermometer for 10 years of car camping and it still reads within 2 degrees of my buddy's digital one that cost $60. The thing is, most people I meet at campsites are checking air temp, not what is actually happening at their sleeping bag or stove level, which is where it matters. Has anyone else noticed the cheap analog ones hold up better in cold or wet conditions than the digital stuff?
Wait, you paid 8 dollars for a thermometer back in 2012 and it still works? That part blows my mind more than the accuracy thing honestly. I have gone through like four digital ones in that same time and every single one died after a season or two, usually from moisture getting inside. The battery door thing always busts too when it gets cold. Your point about checking temp at bag level is so real though, air temp at eye level tells you almost nothing about how cold you will actually be.
