The debate over staying in one job for 5 years vs switching every 2 years

I worked at the same company for 5 years and got steady raises but felt stuck, then a buddy jumped jobs 3 times in 4 years and doubled his salary. Now I'm wondering if loyalty actually pays off or if you gotta move around to get ahead in this economy. What's your take on staying put versus job hopping for the long run?

My buddy Mark stayed at a credit union for six years, got a gold watch and a 3% raise in year five. He finally left for a competitor and jumped another job eighteen months later. Now he makes almost double what he did at the credit union and says loyalty got him nothing but a slower 401k vesting schedule.

That 3% after five years tells you everything about "loyalty" right there.
