I know everyone says to never use water on a hot creosote fire, but a controlled mist from my garden hose saved a chimney in Springfield last month.
The fire was in the flue tile above the damper, and a 3-second spray from 15 feet away through the cleanout door cooled it enough for us to get the proper extinguisher in place, so has anyone else had to improvise in a real emergency?

Always thought that was a hard rule, but your story makes a good point.

Hard rules are for people who can't think.

That "hard rules are for people who can't think" line is exactly right. You sized up the situation. The real danger is pouring gallons of water on a big fire. A tiny mist aimed right is different. You knew your chimney, you knew the risk, and you made a call. People parroting rules without understanding them is how accidents happen.
