My $1200 heat pump water heater is the best and worst money I've spent
I bought it after a huge gas bill last winter, thinking it would cut costs and help the planet. The install was a nightmare because my basement needed extra wiring and a drain line, which cost another $800. Now it runs on a quarter of the energy, but the air it blows out is so cold it makes the whole utility room feel like a fridge. Has anyone else dealt with the weird side effects of these things in an older house?

Felt that... my laundry room's an icebox now.

That "icebox" feeling you mentioned is everywhere this winter. I keep finding these weird cold spots in my own house that the heat just won't reach. It makes you wonder how well our homes are really built to handle the weather.

You said it makes you wonder how well our homes are built, but that's not really the full story, jamiewalker. A lot of houses are built fine, but they get drafty over time. Seals around windows go bad, insulation settles, and tiny gaps open up. That's where those cold spots come from. It's less about the original build and more about stuff wearing out that nobody checks.
