Graded comics vs raw reading copies - which side are you on?
I dropped $80 on a CGC 9.8 copy of X-Men #1 from 1991 and it sits in a box untouched because I'm scared to handle it... but my beat-up raw copy I got for $5 I've read maybe twenty times and it's falling apart. Does the slab really add value if you never actually enjoy the book itself, or am I just missing the point of collecting?

And the slab crowd is gonna hate me for this but a comic you're scared to touch is just an expensive piece of plastic with a book inside it. I get the point of grading for keys or for selling, but if you can't crack it open and enjoy the art and the story then what's the point? That $5 copy you read twenty times is actually doing what a comic is supposed to do. Slabbing a common book like X-Men #1 just feels like throwing money at FOMO. Keep that raw copy, read it until the staples fall out, and sell the slab to fund something you'll actually look at.
