My old way of sectioning for highlights was a total time sink
For the first five years in my chair, I'd freehand every foil with a tail comb, and a full head could take me almost three hours. After a workshop in Austin last fall, I switched to using a plastic weaving cap and a crochet hook for certain clients. It cut my service time down by a full hour on dense, long hair. Has anyone else made a big switch in their sectioning technique that saved serious time?

Grids can be great for speed, but I've found they sometimes give a less natural blend on wavy hair types (thea_chen's friend might have different results). Freehand with a tail comb lets me follow the client's natural fall and cowlicks, which saves me time on fixes later. For me, that careful start is faster overall.
