Warning: I used to think balayage was just a fad
I saw a huge change in my client's hair over about 8 months. She came in with old, grown-out highlights that looked really stripey and harsh. We switched to a full balayage service with a level 7 toner. Now her regrowth is so soft and natural, it's like she never needs a touch-up. What really caused the difference was focusing the lightener only on the mid-lengths and ends. Has anyone else had clients who were scared to switch from traditional foils?

Yeah but that regrowth still needs a touch-up eventually. It just looks softer while it grows out. Foils give way more lift and clean lines if that's what the client wants. Balayage can get muddy on some hair types, seen it happen. It's not a magic fix for everyone.

Oh the "balayage can get muddy" line is so true, @rayc89. I've seen some grown-out looks that just look like they forgot to wash their hair for a month. Foils are for people who actually want their money's worth and a clear result, not a maybe. It's like choosing between a sharp photo and one taken in a steamy bathroom. Some stylists just sell balayage because it's trendy and easier to hide a bad job.
