2FA text codes stopped working after I switched carriers, almost lost my email

Switched to a new phone plan in Dallas two weeks ago and ported my number over. Next day I tried logging into my main email and the two-factor SMS code never arrived. Turns out my old carrier kept the number active for 72 hours, so the code went to a dead line. I had to dig out my recovery codes from a drawer, which I almost threw out last spring. Anyone else had a lag like that during a number port and how did you handle it without recovery codes?
