Switched my phone plan to a local SIM in Bangkok and my monthly bill went from $85 to $12.

Isn't it crazy how much we overpay back home? I read an article that said US carriers basically operate as a cartel... they don't compete on price at all. Your Bangkok bill is the real cost of service when there's actual competition. Makes me wonder why we put up with it here for so long.

You're missing the bigger picture. Those low prices in Bangkok come with trade-offs like slower speeds during peak times and way less coverage in rural areas. Our networks here are built for a huge country with fewer people paying for it, which costs a ton. Companies do compete on things like reliability and customer service, not just the lowest possible price. Calling it a cartel ignores the real reasons our bills are higher. What good is a cheap plan if it doesn't work when you need it?

Hold on, is it really that simple though? I mean, sure prices are lower there, but their whole system is different (way smaller country, way more people packed together). Calling it a cartel feels like a stretch. We have a few big companies, but they do compete, just maybe not in the ways we always notice. Maybe we pay more partly because of how spread out everything is here.
