Took me 4 hours to figure out why my modded Switch joycon kept drifting after I swapped the stick
So last Saturday I finally sat down to replace the left stick on my joycon because it had the drift so bad my guy in Zelda would just walk off cliffs on his own. I ordered a replacement stick off Amazon for like 12 bucks and watched a 9 minute teardown video, figured this was a 30 minute job tops. Took the shell apart, unscrewed the old stick, dropped in the new one, slapped it back together and fired up the calibration screen. Drift. Worse than before. I took it apart and put it back together probably 5 times, cleaned the contacts with isopropyl, even tried bending the little pins on the ribbon cable. Around hour 3 I was about to just buy a whole new joycon when I noticed something dumb on my workbench. The tiny foam pad that sits under the stick on the original had stuck to my tweezers when I pulled the old one out, and I never put it back. Put that little square of foam back in, closed it up, and the calibration was dead center. Has anyone else lost one of those little hidden pads during a swap and spent way too long chasing a ghost?
Those foam pads are the silent killer of joycon repairs, nobody ever mentions them in the teardown videos. Same thing happened to me except mine was stuck to the outside of the shell and I found it two days later on the floor. Now I keep a little dish for every tiny part I pull out, saves me from losing my mind.
