My bathroom grout was a total mess until I tried this weird trick with a steam cleaner
I was about to re-grout my whole shower because the old stuff looked so dark and gross. On a whim, I ran my handheld Bissell steam cleaner over a small section for like 30 seconds and scrubbed with an old toothbrush. It came up almost perfectly white, and I saved myself a huge weekend project and probably $50 in materials. Anyone have a better way to clean grout without harsh chemicals?

Honestly, that sounds like a great way to wreck your grout over time. Steam can force moisture deep into the porous material, which might lead to mold inside the wall or weaken the bond. I'd stick with a proper cleaner made for tile.

Yeah, that's a really good point from @cooper.nathan I hadn't even thought about the moisture getting trapped deep down. My last place had the worst mold problem in the bathroom grout, and it was such a headache to fix. It makes total sense that steam could push water in and make that worse. I'm definitely sticking with my heavy-duty grout cleaner from now on.
