That moment I realized caulking with water on my finger was making things worse

I spent 3 years smoothing caulk joints with a wet finger like every video shows, until a painter friend stopped me mid-job and pointed out I was just washing the adhesion away. Anyone else ditch the finger method for a proper tool and never go back?

Wait, you're telling me the wet finger trick actually messes up the bond? I've been doing that for years on every baseboard and window trim job because I thought it was the pro way to finish the bead. A buddy finally showed me how the water makes a skin on top of the caulk, so it peels off later instead of sticking. I switched to a plastic smoothing set from the hardware store, just the basic one with different corners, and my joints look cleaner without that cloudy residue. Never going back to the finger method, that stuff was a waste of time.

Plastic smoothers saved my trim work too, no more peeling caulk.
