A 12 year old at my store made me rethink what counts as a DIY win
Some kid came in with his mom last Saturday looking for stuff for a school project. I pointed him to the glue guns and he goes "nah, I'm using hot glue from the dollar store, it's the same thing." I started to explain the difference in bonding strength and he just shrugged and said "it holds my project together long enough to turn it in, that's all I need."
That honestly hit different. I've been making frames and wall art with dollar store stuff for years but I always felt like I had to upgrade things or make them look "real." This kid just wanted it to work for what it needed to do. I walked out of that conversation and built a little shelf organizer for my garage using only the $1.25 store stuff, no upgrades, no painting over anything, just cut and glued and it's been holding my spray cans fine for a week now.
Anyone else ever have a moment where someone totally casual made you rethink how much effort you're putting into these projects?
