The guy at the supply house in Boise told me 1 in 4 sheets I hang gets wasted on cuts, so I counted mine for a month
I always figured my scrap pile was just part of the job. Then last month I was loading up at a supply house in Boise and an old timer behind the counter asked how many sheets I buy a week. I said about 60. He said flat out that most hangers lose a quarter of every sheet to cuts. That stuck in my head so I kept my cutoffs in a separate pile for one full month. Turned out he was close. Out of 248 sheets I burned through, 61 of them walked out the door as scrap. That is 24 percent. What got me was most of that waste came from the same thing over and over, me cutting full sheets for closets and small returns when a leftover piece from the last room would have fit fine. So now I stack my drops by size against the wall and grab from there first. Cut my sheet count by 9 in the first two weeks. Any of you keep a drop rack or do you just toss the small stuff and eat the cost?
