Yeah, that's a good way to get a nasty shock or start a fire. Always keep the grounds separate and connected to the right terminals.

Honestly, calling it a "good way to start a fire" feels like fear mongering. People have been twisting grounds together for quick fixes forever and most of the time nothing bad happens. The risk is totally overblown for a simple temporary hookup. As long as the power is off, you're basically fine. This whole "always" rule is for perfect world textbook stuff, not real life where you just need things working.
