Spent $150 on a fancy leveling tool that made my rails worse
Bought a digital SmartLevel last month for a big job at a medical office in Delaware and the readings were off by nearly a degree on the 10th floor. Has anyone else had issues with these battery powered levels or did I just get a lemon?

Readings were off by nearly a degree"? Sounds more like user error, pal.

ben827 saying "user error" is a bit harsh (especially without knowing the situation). I actually read a review somewhere from a surveyor who tested those digital levels against a regular bubble level and found the batteries dying could mess with the readings, especially if you're moving between floors with temperature changes. That medical office job you mentioned probably had HVAC systems running all over (which can mess with electronics too). Honestly I trust my old 4-foot aluminum level more than anything with a battery these days. Maybe try swapping the batteries and recalibrating it, but if it's still off I'd send it back.
