My power bank died mid-trip and left me stranded at an airport gate

Flew into Chicago O'Hare last month and my phone was at 15%. Plugged into my trusty Anker power bank, the one I've had for 3 years, and nothing. Light blinked twice and gave up. Turns out the battery swelled a bit inside and killed the connector. I scrambled to find a charging station near gate B12 but they were all taken. Anyone else had a battery pack just quit on them without any warning? I'm looking for a new one but not sure if I should go bigger or just buy a cheaper spare instead.
