Saw a coffee shop in Portland using a smart plug for their window sign

I was grabbing a latte at this place called Stumptown Roasters yesterday and noticed their neon 'open' sign was plugged into a little white box. The barista told me it's a smart plug on a timer, so it turns on at 7am and off at 8pm automatically. She said it saves them from having to remember every single day and probably cuts a bit on their power bill. Has anyone else set up something simple like this for a home business or even just a porch light?

My old apartment had a switch for the porch light at the back door. I got a smart bulb so it turns on automatically at sunset, and I haven't fumbled for my keys in the dark since. That little bit of tech solved a real daily hassle for me.
