Just hit 50 times making my grandma's biscuit recipe and it's still not perfect
I've been trying to get her buttermilk biscuits right for like two years now, and I finally counted my attempts. Fifty batches, lmao. They're always a little too dense or the tops don't brown right. She wrote 'a pinch of salt' and 'a good amount of flour' on her card, which is zero help. My last try was yesterday and they came out like hockey pucks again. Has anyone else had a family recipe that just feels impossible to nail down?

Have you tried changing the type of flour you're using? My mom's pie crust was impossible until I realized her "good amount of flour" meant a specific brand that's softer than what I usually buy. Those small differences in how flour absorbs liquid can wreck everything. Maybe your grandma bought a particular kind off the shelf that just worked with her pinch of salt method. It's frustrating when the secret ingredient turns out to be something that simple and unspoken.

Ever think she used old flour on purpose?
