Finally got a clean clip on that tough quarter crack

Used to just rasp it down quick and slap a shoe on, but after a bad blowout last spring I started taking more time. Now I use my nippers to make a clean vertical cut about an inch up the wall before I even think about the shoe. It takes an extra five minutes, but the hoof wall holds way better. Anyone else have a go-to method for dealing with those deep quarter cracks?

Ever try a bar shoe with that vertical cut? I had a mare with a crack that just kept opening up. Putting a good bevel on the edges of the cut, then fitting a wide-web bar shoe with clips took all the pressure off. It let the wall grow down without any more stress. That combo finally did the trick after months of it coming back.

Vertical cut first is the only way to go.
