PSA: Tried cheap rasps from the hardware store to save 40 bucks

I bought a set of farrier rasps from a big box store last month thinking they'd do the same job. Wasted about 3 hours on two horses before they dulled out completely. Ended up having to rebuy proper ones from the supply shop for $65 after shipping. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way with budget tools?

Has anybody checked the hardness rating on those big box store rasps? I bet they're using way softer steel that's meant for pine 2x4s, not hardened steel shoes. The difference in heat treatment between a $15 rasp and a $65 one is probably massive, it's not like they just slapped a different handle on it. That's the part that gets me, the metal itself is just not up to the job from the start.

Farrier rasps are $65 at my local supply too, but those store ones are just for wood, not metal horseshoes.
