I was looking at old sewing patterns and found out something wild about zippers
I always thought metal zippers were the standard for vintage clothes. Then I saw a video from the Fashion Institute in New York that said before 1930, most zippers were actually made with paper or cloth tape. Blew my mind. Anyone know other weird old materials they used?

That bit about paper zippers before 1930 is a perfect example. It makes you realize how many things we think are solid and permanent were just experiments with whatever was cheap and handy. I see this with old furniture too, like how they used horsehair for stuffing before foam. It's all just people solving a problem with the stuff they had lying around at the time. We'll probably look just as weird in a hundred years for using all this plastic.

Read an article about early plastic being made from milk, @betht32. Same idea, just using what they had.
