Lost a whole afternoon on a gate that kept sagging
Tried to save time on a job in Akron last month by using those cheap hinge brackets from the big box store. Gate dropped three inches within a week and I had to come back and rehang the whole thing. Those brackets were $12 each and I used four of them, so I wasted $48 plus two hours of labor. The customer was nice about it but I felt like an idiot. Anyone else found a hinge setup that actually holds up over time?

Maybe it's just me, but cheap hardware has its place if you know where to use it. Idk, a gate takes a lot of daily weight and movement. Those $12 brackets probably weren't meant for that kind of load. People slap them on everything and then act surprised when they fail. I've used the same basic stamped steel hinges on a light fence gate for years without a problem, but my neighbor used them on a heavy cedar gate and had the same sagging issue you did. Maybe the real lesson is matching the hinge to the weight, not just grabbing whatever is cheapest and fastest.

RIGHT! That's the whole thing in a nutshell. It's not about the price tag, it's about the weight rating.
