My dad and nephew fight over how to set fence posts
I was helping my dad with a fence job last weekend. He taught me his hand method for setting posts, saying feeling the soil gives the right depth. My nephew in trade school disagrees, pushing for an app to check ground hardness and depth. He calls the old way guesswork that could fail. Now we argue on every family job. I'm torn between tradition and new tech. How do you handle family differences in fencing methods?

Ever have those family jobs where everyone's stuck in their ways? I get it, my uncle and cousin still argue about mixing concrete by hand versus using a ready mix truck. Sometimes the old way just feels right, but the new stuff can save your back.

Watch them argue over concrete while the fence posts are literally falling over. I mean, maybe pick the battle that actually matters? Feels like some people just enjoy having the same fight every holiday.

Ugh, I'm actually with your nephew on this one. My uncle messed up a whole fence line because he 'felt' the soil was fine, but we had a crazy freeze that winter. Every post heaved. An app reading ground density isn't guesswork, it's just measuring what your dad feels with his hands, but with numbers. Tradition is great until you're redoing a whole section. Why not use both? Let your dad teach the feel, then check it with the phone to prove who's right.
