My dad and nephew fight over how to set fence posts

Ugh, I'm actually with your nephew on this one. My uncle messed up a whole fence line because he 'felt' the soil was fine, but we had a crazy freeze that winter. Every post heaved. An app reading ground density isn't guesswork, it's just measuring what your dad feels with his hands, but with numbers. Tradition is great until you're redoing a whole section. Why not use both? Let your dad teach the feel, then check it with the phone to prove who's right.

Found something valuable in a flue and it's eating at me

Did you read any of them? Found an old diary once, same weird feeling.

Appreciation post: A disconnected ground wire in a basement job was a close call

Totally, and like derek868 said, loose wires are a ticking time bomb.

Serious question, why are we still blaming avalanches for the Dyatlov Pass incident?

Seriously, how can anyone still buy the avalanche story? I had the same thing happen at a family dinner last month. I brought up the radiation on their clothes and the missing tongues. Everyone just shrugged and said it must have been an animal. But animals don't fold clothes neatly or leave burns like that. It makes no sense to stick with the simple answer when nothing adds up.

PSA: My attic job showed me a problem with how they check for leaks

Man, that's so common. What worked for me was pulling out my phone and showing the inspector a video of the draft with a lighter flame. They see the visual proof and can't ignore it. I also keep a copy of the energy code handy to point out the air sealing rules. It turns a quick check into a real conversation about the problem. Sometimes you just have to guide them to look beyond the paperwork.
