I spent $40 on a big bag of dried chickpeas and my friends think I'm nuts
Everyone says canned beans are the cheap way to go, but I bought a 10-pound bag of dried ones for about forty bucks. It takes a bit of planning to soak them, but the texture is way better and the cost per meal is way lower. I've made hummus, stews, and even roasted snacks for months now from that one bag. Has anyone else found that a bigger upfront cost on a staple actually saved them more in the long run?

Ever try cooking dried beans in a slow cooker? I do a whole bag at once and freeze them in meal sized portions. The texture is so much better than canned, and you control the salt. That big bag seems pricey at first, but when you break it down, it's pennies per serving. It's the only way I make chili now.

Honestly I was totally against this method for years because I heard you could get sick. Then I saw a post from @jessew83 about doing it and I looked up the safe way to do it. Boiling them first for ten minutes fixes the problem. Now I do a big batch every month and my chili is way better. The texture difference alone makes it worth the little bit of extra work.
