Found a chunk of petrified wood in my yard last week and it got me thinking

Last week, I was digging a new flower bed in the backyard and hit something hard. It was a piece of petrified wood, about the size of my fist, with the grain still clear. Last month, I found a few smaller bits of chert in the same spot. Three years ago, before I moved to this house in Flagstaff, I never would have guessed my own dirt held stuff like this. Has anyone else had their yard turn into a mini dig site?

Honestly, my yard just gives me rocks that break the mower blades. I'd kill for something cool like that.

Ugh, tell me about it @kellyr18. My whole yard is just rocks and weeds. Found a brick last week. A whole brick.

Did you see that post from the Smithsonian about the weird stuff people dig up in their yards? I swear, finding a random brick is practically a rite of passage in some neighborhoods (like where we used to live, with the old Victorian houses).
