The weird thing about the number of steps on my route

Okay, so I walk the same mail route five days a week. For three years, I've counted the steps from the curb to Mrs. Henderson's porch at 124 Maple Street. It's 15 steps. I know it's 15, because I've tripped on the uneven 8th one enough times to remember. But last month, I swear it was 14. I counted twice, thinking I was tired. Next day, back to 15. Then last Tuesday, 14 again. The concrete slabs look the same, nothing's been replaced. It's like the step just... isn't there sometimes. My coworker Dave thinks I'm nuts, but I'm the one walking it. Has anyone else had a small, repeatable thing in their daily routine just change count on them?

Honestly, that's not a step count changing. You're probably just starting your count on a different foot without realizing it. I used to do that on my old running route. I'd swear the telephone poles were moving, but I was just counting from my right foot one day and my left foot the next. Tbh, try counting "one" when the same foot hits the first slab every single time. Bet it's always 15 then.

That reminds me of counting stairs wrong as a kid...
