Update: A customer brought in a 1911 that had been 'cleaned' with a wire wheel on a bench grinder, and the transformation after 40 hours of hand polishing was so dramatic his wife didn't believe it was the same gun.
He sheepishly admitted he'd tried to 'save time' before a match, so I spent a full week carefully bringing the frame and slide back from looking like a scratched-up piece of tin to a proper brushed finish, and now he jokes he needs to hide the grinder from himself.

Reminds me of the time I tried to "fix" my own car radio...

That guy must have been using the grinder on his brain too, lol. At least he learned his lesson the hard way.

@ray_patel27 nailed it, that's exactly what I was thinking. Man, I did something similar once with a toaster. Tried to pry apart the heating element with a butter knife and ended up tripping the whole breaker in my apartment. Spent the next hour in the dark waiting for my roommate to come home with a flashlight. At least your guy probably has a good story now though, right?
