Warning: Taking the wrong turn found us a hidden lakeside village
We got lost on a back road in the mountains (my phone map was acting up). Ended up in this tiny village right on a crystal-clear lake, with maybe a dozen houses. No hotels or gift shops, just locals fishing off the docks. They let us borrow a rowboat for the afternoon, which was so peaceful. Best mistake I ever made on a road trip, honestly.

Actually, I get what you mean about the crystal-clear water looking perfect, but sometimes those mountain lakes are freezing cold, even in summer. I jumped into one once thinking it would be refreshing, and my breath just got knocked right out. The clarity tricks you. It's so pretty to look at from a rowboat, but maybe not for a swim.

@umaf20 is totally right about those cold mountain lakes. I tried swimming in one in Wyoming last August, and it felt like ice water. That rowboat sounds like the perfect way to enjoy the view without freezing!

Yeah, that "clarity tricks you" thing is so true. It's not just the cold, it's how the water messes with your sense of depth. You see every rock on the bottom and think it's shallow, but you're actually over a super deep, dark spot. Makes it feel even colder and kinda spooky.
