My box of handwritten setlists made me see indie shows different
I was digging in my attic for something else and stumbled on a shoebox full of old setlists from shows. They were all scribbled on napkins or torn paper, given to me by bands after their sets. These days, everything is digital and polished, with setlists posted online before the show even starts. It made me realize how much the spontaneous, messy part of live music has gotten lost. I kind of loved not knowing what was coming next.

Honestly, that hits hard. I still have a few of those napkin setlists tucked in an old book somewhere. Tbh the digital ones feel like a menu now, but those stained paper scraps are the real receipt from the night. You could feel the room's energy just holding them. Ngl it makes me want to go dig mine out and remember what that felt like.

I found a setlist from a 2007 Walkmen show that’s just a bar napkin with a beer ring stain soaking through the song titles. You can see where the pen skipped because the surface was wet. That messy object is the whole story of that night. A perfect digital list posted at 8 PM just can’t hold that feeling. It’s too clean, like it erased the actual event to sell you the idea of it.

Finding those old paper setlists must have been a real trip down memory lane. That physical scrap of the night feels way more special than a clean digital list. Really miss that surprise of not knowing what came next too...
