Question about preheating air fryers - is it really necessary?

My buddy Mike kept telling me I had to preheat my air fryer for 5 minutes every time, so I finally timed it and my chicken thighs came out exactly the same after 3 tests, so now I'm wondering who actually bothers with that extra step?
