Changed my mind about grass after tracking water use for 2 months
I always thought a big green lawn was the dream for my backyard in Phoenix. Then I measured my water bill during June and July and saw the sprinklers alone used over 4,000 gallons a month. That number made me swap half the grass for gravel and desert plants. Anyone else cut back their lawn after seeing the real cost?

I pulled out 300 square feet of grass in my backyard last year after seeing a $150 jump in my summer water bill. Replaced it with decomposed granite and some agave plants, and now my yard still looks nice but uses maybe a fifth of the water. It feels way better knowing I'm not just dumping money into keeping grass alive in 110 degree heat.

Wait, 300 square feet? That's like the size of a small apartment! I can't imagine tearing up that much lawn by hand in 110 degree heat. You must've been dying out there.
