Hit episode 100 on my podcast this morning and nobody showed up to record
Realized after 6 months of audio issues that my co-host had been using his laptop mic instead of the USB one I bought him, and the only reason I figured it out was because my 7 year old asked why uncle Dave sounded like he was in a bucket, has anyone else wasted that much time on a simple fix?

Lmao the 7 year old being the one to diagnose the problem is peak comedy. Nothing like a kid's brutally honest ears to solve a six month mystery. Sounds like uncle Dave was recording from the other side of a pillow this whole time. At least you finally got the bucket filter removed from your audio chain.

The kid diagnosis is absolutely the highlight here. I've been there with a similar issue where my co-host's audio sounded like he was broadcasting from a fish tank for three months before I realized his headset was paired to his phone instead of the computer. What ended up helping me was creating a simple pre-recording checklist that we both run through before every episode: check your microphone in the system settings, do a quick test clip, and listen back for five seconds. Nobody wants to be the one to tell their friend their audio is bad, but it saves so much heartache down the line.

127 episodes in, I finally realized my co-host had been recording on his phone voice memos and emailing me the files as MP3s. @milesrobinson nailed it with the kid diagnosis, but what really gets me is how many listeners probably unsubscribed without saying a word. At least now you know exactly where your audio quality baseline was.
