My book club fight over a single sentence got way out of hand

Last Tuesday at our meeting, we spent 45 minutes debating one line in chapter 8 of "The Night Circus". Somebody thought it meant the circus was dying, I read it as a fresh start, and two others had completely different takes. Our moderator finally had to cut us off and vote to move on. Has anyone else's group ever gotten stuck on one tiny detail like that?

Man, that sentence debate would have had me reaching for the snacks way too early! My old book club once spent 40 minutes arguing if a character's "heavy sigh" meant they were tired or just annoyed. We ended up with three different camps and a moderator who looked like she wanted to dive out the window. I still can't hear the word "sigh" without getting a little twitchy. At least your group had a vote to end it while we just kept circling like confused sharks.

Cut the debate off at ten minutes next time. I run my group with a strict timer for each topic, and when the bell goes we vote. No second chances, no re-opening the discussion. Saves everyone from spinning their wheels on something that doesn't matter that much. Also, tell the person who brought up the sentence to write down their interpretation and read it to the group before anyone else talks. That way the original idea gets heard first without people jumping in with their hot takes. Keeps things focused and stops the circular arguments before they start.
