Our club picked 'The Road' over 'Project Hail Mary' and I'm glad we did
Honestly, everyone was pushing for the sci-fi book because it's fun and has a happy ending. I argued for 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy, saying a book club should make you think, not just feel good. We read it last month and the talk we had about hope in a hopeless place was way deeper than any chat about aliens. Anyone else have a club pick a tough book that paid off?

Wait you actually got a whole club to read The Road? I tried that once and my friends said it was too depressing to even finish the first chapter.

How did you even get them to try the first chapter? (I'm impressed). I used to think it was just a sad book too, but talking about it with a group totally flipped that for me. It became less about the gloom and more about the tiny bits of hope they keep going for. That discussion made the whole thing feel way more meaningful, you know?

Little hope is the whole point, not just a side thing.
