That moment I realized I was the annoying book club person

I used to always push for literary fiction picks at our book club in Austin. Last month Sarah brought up how nobody finished the last three books I suggested, and I looked around the room and saw everyone nodding. Now I just ask what people actually want to read first, works way better.

People have a hard time saying no in the moment, especially when someone's all excited about something they love. You see it everywhere... at work when the boss asks for volunteers, at family dinners when someone pushes a recipe, or even just picking a movie with friends. Everyone nods along to keep the peace but nobody actually follows through. It took me a while to learn that just because people don't argue with you doesn't mean they agree with you. Now I ask directly what folks actually want and it's like a weight gets lifted off the whole room. Good on you for catching that before the book club fell apart completely.

can't say I agree with that @gavinross, sometimes you just need to go with the flow.
