My freezer meal prep last Sunday turned into a mess of wasted food

I tried to save money by batch cooking 12 servings of chili last Sunday. Used dried beans and canned tomatoes from the store, spent about $8 total. But I forgot to label the containers and now I have 3 unidentifiable bricks in my freezer. How do you guys keep track of what's actually in those frozen blocks without ruining a whole meal?

I mean, freezer roulette is how I discovered my "chili" was actually cookie dough once.

Sharpie on a strip of masking tape works better than my memory ever did.

Oh man, the "tape on a strip" trick is a lifesaver. I finally caved and tried it for labeling my charging cables and power strips, and it's been a game changer. Now I just grab a piece of blue painter's tape, write "PHONE" or "LAPTOP" on it, and stick it near the plug. No more unplugging the wrong thing and wondering why my tablet is dead the next morning.
