Appreciation post: My dad's advice about a cash envelope system finally clicked
My dad told me for years to try the cash envelope method, but I always brushed it off, thinking my debit card was fine. He said to start with my grocery budget, take out $200 in cash at the start of the month, and when it's gone, it's gone. I finally tried it in January after another month of overspending. It was a total game changer. Physically seeing the money leave the envelope made me think twice about every single purchase, like that extra bag of chips or fancy cheese. I even started meal planning around what was on sale. By the third week, I still had $40 left, which never happened before. Has anyone else had a simple piece of advice like that completely change their spending habits?

That physical limit is the whole point, it stops the mental math tricks we play on ourselves. My own envelope for eating out made me realize how much small takeout orders add up. The system feels restrictive at first, but that's what builds better habits.

Oh man, that reminds me of my old coffee budget. I had to switch to cash because my card made it too easy to ignore the daily five dollar drain.
