My new $60 coffee maker decided to brew a pot of steam instead of coffee
This happened last Tuesday morning, right before I had a big meeting. I filled it up, put the grounds in, and hit start. Instead of the usual gurgle, it just started hissing like a tiny angry train. A huge cloud of steam shot out of the top, and the carafe was bone dry. I unplugged it fast, and after it cooled down, I saw the water was just sitting in the tank, boiling away but not going anywhere. I guess the pump or a tube inside just gave up on its first real job. I had to run to the gas station for a terrible cup of coffee. Has anyone else had a brand new appliance just completely fail on its first use? What did you do with it?

Your coffee maker wanted to be a steam engine instead.

Wait, wait, hold up. You're telling me it literally started spewing steam before any water came out? Like one of those old-timey train whistles? That's insane. I've seen coffee makers drip, I've seen them clog, but I've never seen one just decide to become a fog machine on the counter. That's not a normal appliance failure, that's a horror movie prop in the making. How long did it take you to realize it wasn't just, you know, a really aggressive preheating cycle?

Brew a pot of steam" is such a perfect way to put it. That's the worst kind of failure, when it acts like it's working but just makes a huge mess instead. I'd be sending that thing straight back for a refund.
