My buddy's reaction to seeing my hand-cut dovetails for the first time was PRICELESS.
He thought they were machine-made until I showed him the chisels, and his shock made all the practice WORTH it.

How many dovetails did you have to cut before you felt confident enough to show someone? Was it the technique that took the longest to get right?

Wow, at least his dime would've had company!

Man, that reminds me of the first jewelry box I tried. I was so proud of it until my dad, who's been a carpenter forever, picked it up and just went quiet. He finally pointed at the dovetails and said the gaps were so big you could lose a dime in them. That was the moment I realized neatness mattered way more than just getting the joints to fit, even if it was just a wonky little pine box.
