A quick heads up about those new 'ultra-light' backpacking stoves
I tested three different models last month on a trip near Bend, and all of them failed to boil a liter of water in under 8 minutes with even a slight breeze. The fuel efficiency claims are way off, and you'll end up carrying more canisters. Has anyone found a reliable brand that actually performs as advertised in real conditions?

Well my own stove story involves trying to heat soup in a light rain and just giving up to eat it cold. Felt like I was trying to boil water with a birthday candle. Ended up using so much fuel on that trip it totally defeated the weight savings. Still looking for that magic stove that doesn't turn into a drama queen with a little wind.

That's the eternal camping trade-off. You save three ounces on the stove, then burn through eight dollars worth of fuel because it takes twenty minutes to boil. I've had better luck just building a tiny windbreak out of rocks.
