Carried a 7-pound tent for 8 years before I finally weighed it

Found a digital luggage scale at a yard sale for 3 bucks. Hooked it on my tent just for fun. Felt like an idiot. Could have saved 4 pounds for under 200 bucks if I'd just checked sooner. Anyone else hauling around gear they never actually weighed?

Did you actually weigh it on the scale or just hold it up? The yard sale scales can be pretty off sometimes. I've had one read 3 pounds for something that was clearly closer to 5.

OH MAN you're totally right about the yard sale scales being WILDY inaccurate. I actually had this same thought just the other day when I saw that post. But here's something nobody's talking about - the temperature of the room can mess with those old spring scales like crazy. If it was cold out at the yard sale, the metal contracts and the scale reads heavier than it really is. I've seen a scale read 20% off just from sitting in the sun versus the shade. Plus the humidity makes the paper or plastic parts swell up and throw everything off even more. So basically you could have a scale that's ALREADY junk, but the weather just makes it COMPLETELY useless for getting an actual weight.
