PSA: I almost got caught in a flash flood because I trusted my old rain gear.
For a decade I just used a basic poncho from a gas station, but last spring in the Smokies it soaked through in 20 minutes. I switched to a proper Gore-Tex shell and it's a total lifesaver. Anyone else have a piece of gear they upgraded after a close call?

My buddy learned that lesson with a cheap tent. Got caught in a surprise storm in the Adirondacks. The seams just gave up, turned into a total indoor rain shower. He was bailing water with his cooking pot all night. Bought a real 3-season tent the second he got home.
