Overheard a guy at a cafe in Medellin bragging about never paying for a co-working space, just using hotel lobbies. His laptop got snatched 20 minutes later.

Sounds like a solid plan until it isn't. Free wifi doesn't mean free security.

Read a whole article about this, basically what @jade226 said. Free spots are thief magnets.

My buddy tried that in Bangkok, left his phone on the table for one second and it was just gone.
