Hot take: Should you bother patching drywall or just rip it out?

I had a chat with my buddy Larry who does trim work, and he said he never bothers with mesh tape and mud for more than a few small holes. He just cuts out the whole section and screws in a new piece. Now I'm second-guessing my whole approach after spending 3 hours on a 2-foot crack in my basement wall. Is patching really worth the time when a new sheet of 4x8 drywall is like 15 bucks? What do you guys do for bigger wall repairs?
