My basement flooded last Tuesday and I spent three days fixing it

I came home to about two inches of water from a backed-up floor drain. I had to rent a wet vac from the hardware store and run a dehumidifier nonstop for 48 hours. Has anyone else in a rainy area like Seattle dealt with this and found a better long-term fix?

Actually, gutters and a valve won't fix a floor drain backup. That's coming from the city sewer line, not your roof. The real fix is a proper overhead sewer system. It's a bigger job, but it lifts the drain line above the flood level. Backwater valves can still fail if the pressure gets too high.

Ugh, that's the worst. Been there with my own floor drain. The wet vac is just a band-aid. You need to look into a backwater valve for that drain line. It's a one-way flap that stops sewage from coming back in. Also, check your gutters and downspouts. Make sure they're moving water far away from your foundation. That combo usually fixes it for good.

Two inches of water is a huge mess, I feel for you. I agree with @jessec35 about the backwater valve, that's what finally stopped my basement problems for good. I also had to extend all my downspouts another five feet away from the house. The combo really works.
