Found out the average drywall sheet weighs 55 pounds, which explains a lot

I was reading an old trade manual from the 90s at my local library and it said the standard 4x8 sheet of half-inch drywall averages 55 pounds. I always just lugged them around without thinking about the number, but seeing it written down made my back hurt just reading it. It really puts the physical side of the job into perspective. Anyone else come across a stat about the trade that made you stop and think?

That number always seemed a bit high to me. My crew uses a different brand that clocks in closer to 50 pounds for the same size. The exact weight can really depend on the maker and how much moisture it's holding. A fresh delivery on a humid day is a whole different beast. The manual might be quoting a specific, heavier type. It's still a brutal lift either way, lol.

Ever wonder if the manual weight is just a legal cover for when it's soaked? @ruby_murphy is right about humidity, a damp one feels like lifting concrete. They probably just picked the worst case number to avoid getting sued.
