My uncle in Denver said using premix mud is for hacks, but I'm not so sure.

We were finishing a basement last week and he saw my bucket of Sheetrock 45. He told me that any real taper mixes their own compound from powder every single time for better control. It got me thinking about speed versus quality on tight schedules. Do you guys always mix from scratch or is the premix okay for certain jobs?

Totally agree with your uncle. Mixed my own for years and the control is way better. Premix is fine for patches but you can't beat fresh mud for a full job.

You can't beat fresh mud for a full job" - man, tell me about it. I tried doing a whole room with premix once and it was like fighting a losing battle the whole time. Had to keep adding water and stirring just to get it workable, and by the end my arm was more tired than the time I tried to paddleboard without any practice. Never again. Fresh mix is the only way to go if you want that smooth finish without the headache.
