Saw a wild old service drop in a historic district job

Working on a house in the French Quarter. They had original knob and tube still live in the attic. But the drop from the pole was something else. Two bare wires just twisted onto the service cable with no weatherhead. Looked like it was done in the 40s and never touched. Made me wonder how many old setups like that are still out there. Anyone else run into ancient overhead work that should have been replaced decades ago?

Seen a few, they're terrifying.

Ever think it was just sloppy work? I used to, but some of these are done on purpose to save a buck.

How are those bare wires not shorting out in the rain?
